Missional Creatures (2021)

Mission is probably a word you’ve heard before in lots of different places. Military units carry out missions. People who are incredibly driven to complete tasks are considered to be on a mission—they are singularly focused. In religious groups of various kinds, we have people called missionaries who go and live in other countries and assimilate into other cultures with the express purposes of spreading the good news of their faith. These are helpful ways of thinking about what mission is. But it certainly is not all.

I believe that God wants to make us all into missional creatures. He is working to shape us and prepare every part of us—our hearts, our minds, our bodies—to carry out his grand purpose. We will explore more about that purpose as we dive into our passage for the next several weeks. In the book of Matthew, these are simply the last words of Jesus before he leaves earth and takes his place as king over heaven. We call it The Great Commission.
